We currently offer the following courses, depending on enrolment:

Boating (The Power Squadron Course)

The next scheduled class will be held on Tuesday evenings, starting on January 8, 2008 at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute. Graduation is held in April for students who complete the course during the fall or winter term.

The fee is $250.00, which includes the cost of instruction, all manuals, materials, exams and the Pleasure Craft Operator Certification Card (PCOC). A special fee of $450.00 applies for any 2 people within the same family who take the course together.

This course is the foundation of everything that is offered by C.P.S. Upon completion, you are entitled to receive your Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate which eventually every boater will need, plus Regular Membership in C.P.S. The course covers the full range of topics, such as...

  1. Aids to Navigation, buoys and beacons, rules of the waterway,
  2. Safety equipment required by Government regulations,
  3. The compass, charting and plotting
  4. Boat handling under all conditions and cruise assignments
  5. Docking and Anchoring
  6. Other topics such as knots, weather factors and emergencies, etc.

BoatPro (Pleasure Craft Operator Certification)

The next scheduled class will begin on Saturday, April 5, 2008 (morning only) and finish on Sunday, April 6 at noon.

The fee is $60.00, which includes the cost of instruction, manual, examination and the Certification Card. Enrolment in advance is required.

This course is offered at other times during the year when registration numbers make it possible to commence a class.  BoatPro is limited to the minimum knowledge required by the goverment's Office of Boating Safety to enable a boater to obtain the Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate, referred to as the PCOC.

Piloting

The Piloting Course is a continuation of the Boating Course and is being offered on Tuesday evenings, starting on January 8, 2008, pending enrolment. Completion of the Boating course is a prerequisite.

The fee for this course is $110.00, which includes the cost of instruction, manual, materials and examination.

This course is offered in the fall and winter each year and covers the fundamentals of running fixes, deviation, tides, currents, piloting, charting and plotting techniques.

Advanced Piloting

Pending enrolment, this course is being offered on Tuesday evenings, starting on January 8, 2008. Completion of the Boating course is required and completion of the Piloting course is recommended.

The fee is $110.00, which includes the cost of instruction, manual, materials and examination.

This course applies in-depth emphasis on piloting, navigation, currents, tides and fixes. Also included is extensive charting and plotting and the documented simulation of an off-shore cruise.

(VHF) Radio Operator Course - includes DSC Endorsement

The next scheduled class will begin on Monday, April 7, 2008 evening and finish on Tuesday, April 15 evening. The fee is $60.00, which includes the cost of instruction, the manual, examination and the Operator's Certificate approved by Industry Canada.

Pre-enrolment is required (call 416-742-8979). Also, the 2 scheduled sessions are required in order to complete the examination.

The marine (VHF) radio is a vital link for boat-to-boat and boat-to-shore communication. It is a source of information for marine traffic across the nation, for weather forecasts, for information about marina facilities, not to mention your ability to reach help in the event of an emergency.

Any person operating a marine (VHF) radio on a pleasure craft is required by law to have a Maritime (VHF) Radio Operator's Restricted Certificate. Failure to do so could result in a significant fine.

This course details the Regulations, communications procedures, words and phrases to be used, distress and other priority calls and details of the Digital Selective Calling (DSC) service.

Navigating with GPS Course - (3-evening sesions in January 2008 pending enrolment)

GPS is the most accurate navigational system known to man, bringing accuracy of position to as little as a few feet. Unfortunately, many people acquire GPS receivers with primary regard for its accuracy and ease of use, ignoring the need to understand some basic principles of navigation. This course is designed to teach students how to navigate using GPS.

Knotting and Splicing With Synthetic Lines - Specialty Course (subject to demand)

Many of the knots and splices in use today were created to tie ropes made of natural fibers such as sisal, hemp, manila, cotton, etc. However synthetic lines (nylon, dacron, polypropylene etc.) are much in demand and use today, but basic knotting instruction has not kept pace. This course is designed to teach knots that are more suited to synthetic lines.
